At what level should my child be reading?
In Grade 1, learners must master the first building block of reading: phonics. Practice phonics every day and make use of phonics cards.
In Grades 2 and 3, there is little focus on basic phonics as it is assumed that your learner has mastered this in Grade 1. It's completely normal for your child to still sound out big words, but in Grades 2 and 3 they should be reading with fluency and comprehension. The biggest problem we experience in Grade 4 is that learners never learned to understand what they read, so when they start completing formal assessments like tests or exams, they don’t understand the questions.
