How do I calculate my APS score?

In South Africa, universities and other tertiary institutions often ask for a candidate’s APS score — their Admission Point Score. This is used as an entry requirement and differs for various courses.  Your APS score is based on your Grade 12 results. Each subject earns a certain number of points, depending on the percentage achieved. In other words, the better your marks, the better your APS score will be.

Using your top six matric subjects, follow the points system below to see how many points you score for each subject (remember that most universities do not include Life Orientation when calculating your APS):
  1. 80% – 100% = 7 points
  2. 70% – 79% = 6 points
  3. 60% – 69% = 5 points
  4. 50% – 59% = 4 points
  5. 40% – 49% = 3 points
  6. 30% – 39% = 2 points
  7. 0% – 29% = 1 point
Example:
Paul received the following marks for his six matric subjects. Based on the points system above, we can allocate points for each subject.
  1. Mathematics: 55% = 4 points
  2. English First Additional Language: 85% = 7 points
  3. Afrikaans Huistaal: 77% = 6 points
  4. Geography: 90% = 7 points
  5. Accounting: 50% = 4 points
  6. Physical Sciences: 52% = 4 points

Then, add all the points together. Paul’s APS is 32.

Consult the course requirements at the tertiary institution where you would like to study to find out what your APS score should be for the field or course that you are interested in.
