What does 'immigrant status' mean?

Immigrant status applies to :
  1. a child or a dependent of a diplomatic representative of a foreign government recognised in South Africa, or
  2. a child who first enrolled at and entered a South African school in Grade 7 or a more senior grade, or
  3. a child who started their schooling in South Africa and has subsequently attended school outside South Africa for two or more consecutive years after Grade 3 (or its equivalent) and has since returned to South Africa.
Immigrant status is generally applicable to learners who do not speak a First Additional Language due to living or growing up abroad. Parents may choose to apply for an exemption from an additional language (from Grade 10) or apply for assessment accommodation for a lowered pass mark for the additional language (Grades 4 to 9).  According to the national policy pertaining to the programme and promotion requirements of the national curriculum statement, an immigrant learner in the Intermediate or Senior Phase (Grades 4 to 9) must:
  1. Pass one of the required two official languages as contemplated in subparagraph (b) on at least First Additional Language level and obtain a rating of Moderate Achievement (Level 3) in that language; and
  2. comply with the Intermediate and Senior Phase promotion requirements as contemplated in paragraphs 14 and 21, respectively.
